The hour long special looked at the unusual and flesh-creeping bugs and illnesses that holidaymakers and travelers alike, can pick up when overseas and follows the invaluable work of the doctors and nurses at the Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine who are battling to diagnose and treat patients who have been infected with numerous tropical diseases and parasites.
Alan Hughes – Communications Manager for the Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine said:
“The crew were here for seven weeks over the summer and got a great range of cases, some of which they were able to link into our ongoing research. We were very pleased with the way that the film explained the role of LSTM and Well Travelled Clinics and blended them into an interesting and entertaining documentary.”

Film crew at LSTM
Founded in 1898, the Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine (LSTM) is a leading Centre of Excellence focused on improving health, eradicating disease and saving lives through first class research, education and technical assistance. The school is at the forefront of developing new treatments for many of the world’s most dangerous tropical diseases and the documentary follows the doctors as they treat travelers suffering from a range of conditions including malaria, people who have been bitten by wild monkeys, parasites that attack the liver and eyes and even leprosy.

The film also features a part of the schools laboratory which is home to a collection of some of the world’s most dangerous snakes. These snakes are kept solely for producing life saving and affordable anti-venom which is invaluable for the thousands of people who are bitten worldwide each year. The school also houses colonies of mosquitoes and other unsavoury critters and the film even captures mosquitoes being fed a ‘blood meal’ on a doctors arm.
The documentary is not only interesting and informative but also highlights what a truly amazing service the Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine provides to the thousands of unlucky holidaymakers on a yearly basis and definitely proves that it’s not always fun in the sun!
